Burfa Bog (Radnorshire Wildlife Trust Reserve)

The boardwalk stretches out across open water and sphagnum moss - Burfa Bog is one of those places that stops you dead. It's a proper working wetland reserve run by Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, and what makes it special is that you can actually get out onto the bog itself via the raised wooden paths without destroying the delicate habitat underneath.

The reserve sits just outside Presteigne in Mid Wales, and it's the sort of spot that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick photo stop. In spring and early summer the dragonflies are mental - emperor, southern hawker, the lot. Birdwatchers come for the curlew and snipe, though you'll need patience and decent binoculars. The bog plants are genuinely odd if you get close - sundews, bog rosemary, sphagnum varieties most people have never heard of.

It's free to access and doesn't need booking, though the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust's website (when you find it) sometimes mentions seasonal restrictions for ground-nesting birds. Allow an hour minimum, more if you're into plants or birds. The boardwalk can be slippery when wet, so proper footwear matters.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Rockbridge Park and Hush Hush Glamping are both dead close - this works well as a morning visit before heading elsewhere. It's not a sprawling day-long destination, but it's exactly what Mid Wales does well: intimate, quiet, and genuinely wild without being remote enough to feel isolating.
