Burbage Edge

The gritstone edge rises up abruptly from the moorland south of Buxton, and it's proper dramatic stuff - the kind of rocky outcrop that makes you understand why the Peak District grabbed people's imaginations in the first place. Burbage Edge isn't a summit exactly, more a series of weathered cliffs and tors that run for a decent stretch across the moor. You get up here on foot, and the walking is straightforward enough - the moorland paths are well-trodden, though boggy in places after rain.

What draws people is the rock. Climbers use it year-round, but walkers will find something equally good: the views across towards Mam Tor and the surrounding ridges are genuinely sweeping, especially on a clear day. The gritstone itself is textured and dramatic, all those weathered edges and pockets that make you want to run your hands over it. It's the kind of place that feels like you've properly earned the view, even though the walk from Buxton isn't particularly long.

This works best for walkers and climbers rather than families with small children - there's no visitor facility, just moor and rock. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're coming from Buxton. Spring and early autumn are best; the moor can be exposed and windy in winter. It fits naturally into a Peak District holiday if you're based at one of the caravan parks near Buxton - Lime Tree Holiday Park or Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club are both close enough for an afternoon visit without faffing about with drive times.
