Bupton Hill

The climb up Bupton Hill, just outside Devizes, is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just a proper bit of legwork that rewards you with decent views across the Wiltshire chalk downlands. On a clear day you can see enough of the surrounding countryside to justify the walk, though I wouldn't say the view stops you in your tracks.

It's the sort of place walkers on a holiday at nearby Blackland Lakes might tackle as a half-day excursion rather than a main event. The hill itself is manageable for families with older kids who don't mind a steady gradient, and it's free to access - you just turn up and walk. Allow maybe an hour or so depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

The real appeal is the walking itself rather than any dramatic payoff. If you're based in the area doing the rounds of Wiltshire's countryside parks and taking in a bit of gentle hiking, this fits in nicely. It's the sort of hill that makes sense as part of a larger day out rather than a destination in itself.
