Bullbeck Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Bullbeck Copse sits just outside Alresford and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Hampshire forest - dense trees, quiet paths, and the occasional surprise. The copse isn't enormous, so you're looking at forty minutes to an hour if you dawdle, which you should.

The canopy does most of the heavy lifting here. In autumn it's genuinely stunning, all bronze and gold filtering the light in that particular way that makes you understand why people banged on about the Romantic poets. Spring's decent too, though the wildflower show is more subtle than you might hope. Summer gets thick and humid, so go early if you're visiting then.

Walkers will appreciate it most - there's nothing here for kids to "do" beyond splash in a stream or collect conkers, so families after playground action should look elsewhere. The paths are manageable but can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. It's free to access, which is always welcome.

As part of a park holiday at Hampshire Hills just down the road, it's ideal for an afternoon leg-stretch when the weather's decent. The proximity to Alresford means you're not committed to spending hours here, and you can add it onto a proper walk across the broader area. Don't overestimate it - it's a nice wood, not a revelation - but it does what it says on the tin without fuss.
