Bull Wood

Dense woodland that sprawls across the Weald, Bull Wood is what you come to when you want actual forest rather than a manicured walk. It's serious, proper woodland - the kind where you lose the carpark from view after five minutes and forget there's a town called Cranbrook just beyond the trees.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous, thick with beech and oak. Paths thread through, some obvious, others less so. In spring the bluebells take over completely, which is worth timing a visit for if you're in the area. Summer's too green to see properly into the distance, but autumn works brilliantly - proper golden light through the leaf cover.

This is for walkers and people after a bit of solitude rather than families wanting a playground experience. Dogs get a lot out of it. History types might poke around - there's evidence of old settlements if you know what to look for, though the information boards aren't exactly extensive.

Allow two to three hours if you want to actually explore rather than just loop back to the car. The ground gets muddy fast after rain, so boots are sensible.

Stay at Glassenbury Camping just half a mile away and Bull Wood becomes your morning walk before breakfast. It's close enough to Hopgarden Glamping too if you want something a touch more comfortable. The woodland works well as a quiet counter to busier attractions - you could easily spend a few days based around Cranbrook hitting different spots without feeling rushed.
