Bull Meadow

Walk east from Colchester and you'll find yourself at Bull Meadow, a proper working nature reserve that doesn't make a fuss about itself. It's the kind of place where you actually see things - marsh harriers, water voles, wetland plants - rather than just walking round looking at empty fields.

The reserve is fairly compact, so you're not committing to a full day's hike. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Birdwatchers will get the most from it, especially in spring and autumn when migration patterns bring rarer visitors through. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet - there's not much to do except look and listen, which some will love and others will tolerate for twenty minutes.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. No visitor centre or café, so bring your own supplies if you're planning to linger. The best time to visit is early morning when the birds are active and the light hits the water nicely.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Colchester - Colchester Country Park is just two miles away, or Ardleigh Caravan & Camping if you want a bit more distance - Bull Meadow makes a solid morning or afternoon trip. It won't replace a proper nature reserve day out, but it's a solid local spot that works well alongside other Colchester attractions. The Essex coast isn't far either, so you could easily combine this with a coastal walk.
