Buittle Hill

Standing at just 180 metres, this modest summit near Dalbeattie punches well above its weight for views. The climb takes about 45 minutes through mixed woodland and heather moorland, with a fairly gentle gradient that won't leave you gasping for breath.

From the top, you get proper panoramic views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District fells - on a clear day, you can spot Skiddaw and Helvellyn. The sight of the tide racing across the mudflats below is particularly impressive if you time it right.

Walkers will find this a lovely warm-up hike or cool-down after tackling something more demanding in the area. Families with older children should manage it fine, though toddlers might struggle with the boggy patches near the summit. The path isn't waymarked, so decent navigation skills help - or at least a good map.

Being so close to several holiday parks around Dalbeattie makes this an ideal evening stroll when you fancy stretching your legs. Glenearly Caravan Park sits just over a mile away, while Kippford View Holiday Park gives you easy access to both the hill and the coast. Allow two hours for the round trip, and bring waterproofs - the weather can turn quickly up here, even on what starts as a sunny day.
