Buidhe Bheinn

The walk up Buidhe Bheinn doesn't grab you immediately from the road near Kyle. It's a proper slog of a hill rather than a dramatic peak - 899 metres of steady climb through boggy terrain and bracken. But that's precisely why it's worth doing. The views south towards the Five Sisters of Kintail open up gradually, and on a clear day you get the whole Kintail range laid out like a map. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit. The path starts rough and gets rougher, so decent boots aren't optional. Families with younger kids might find this one a bit much - it's not technical scrambling, but it's relentless and the weather can turn fast up here.

What makes Buidhe Bheinn worth the effort is the quiet. You won't fight crowds like you would on Ben Nevis or the tourist peaks further west. It's a solid day out for hillwalkers who want some proper Highland scenery without the circus. The ridge walks nearby add even more appeal if you're camping at Glenshiel - that site sits just minutes away and gives you a proper base for tackling this corner of Kintail. Go on a settled day if possible. The bog is manageable when dry; wet, it'll soak your patience and your boots. Best tackled between May and September when the midges are at least fewer.
