Bryn Tanycastell

The walk up Bryn Tanycastell rewards you with one of those rare views that makes the climb actually feel worth doing. It's not a massive peak - more of a proper hill really - but from the top near Betws-y-Coed you get the Conwy Valley spread out below you, which is genuinely lovely on a clear day.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than anything technical. The path is well-trodden and takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness and how often you stop for breath. Walkers will find it honest work without being punishing, and it's the kind of outing where teenagers won't complain too much - the payoff's immediate enough to keep them motivated.

Timing matters here. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the valley into something actually worth the effort. Go midday in summer and you'll be squinting into haze. Winter mornings, when the peaks are frosted and the air is clear, are genuinely special.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer Snowdonia exploration. You could pair it with Betws-y-Coed's other walks and the Swallow Falls nearby, then base yourself at Snowdonia Glamping Holidays or Maenan Abbey Caravan Park for the night. Neither park is far away, so you're not adding much driving time to your day.

Free to do, obviously - just park sensibly in the village and follow the path. Allow three hours if you're not rushed, including a proper sit-down at the top with a flask. Not the Everest of Welsh peaks, but solid value for a couple of hours out of your day.
