Bryn Glas

The walk up Bryn Glas from Aberystwyth is steep, honest work - but the payoff is proper views across Cardigan Bay. This isn't some gentle stroll. You're looking at a decent climb that takes the better part of an hour depending on your fitness, though the summit sits at only 293 metres, so don't be put off entirely.

What makes it worth the effort is the 360-degree panorama once you've got your breath back. On a clear day you'll see right across to the Preseli Hills and down the coast towards New Quay. The mountain itself is bare moorland, grazed by sheep, which means zero shade - go early or late to avoid the worst of the sun. Walkers get the most from Bryn Glas; it's a proper peak-bagger's tick rather than a family afternoon out. Young kids would struggle with the gradient, and there's nothing up top but views and a trig point.

It's free, naturally - just a walk from town. Give yourself two hours return if you're not rushed. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the weather's more stable. It pairs well with a stay at one of the nearby camps: Forester's Retreat Glamping and Tyn Ffordd Fach are both within easy reach of Aberystwyth town centre, putting you minutes from the trailhead.

Straightforward, unspoilt, and properly rewarding. Just mind your knees on the way down.
