Bryn Gellilefrith

Most walkers heading up from Llanidloes miss this entirely, which is rather their loss. Bryn Gellilefrith stands as one of Mid Wales's more accessible peaks, offering proper hill walking without the commitment of a full day expedition. The views from the summit sweep across the Cambrian Mountains, with the Clywedog Valley spreading out below like a green carpet.

Families with older children will find this a good introduction to serious Welsh hill country. The ascent is steady rather than punishing, though you'll need decent boots and waterproofs - this is Wales, after all. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top.

What makes this peak particularly appealing is its proximity to several holiday parks around Llanidloes. Red Kite Touring Park and Clywedog Riverside Holiday Home Park both sit within a mile, making it an ideal morning walk before an afternoon by the caravan. The closer Dol-Llys Farm Caravan & Camping is literally on your doorstep.

Weather can change quickly up here, so check conditions before setting off. Spring and early summer offer the clearest views, though autumn brings its own rewards with the valley ablaze in copper and gold. Not the most challenging peak in Powys, but certainly one of the most rewarding for the effort involved.
