Bryn Garw

The walk up Bryn Garw takes about forty minutes from the car park near Llanidloes, and it's one of those climbs where the effort genuinely pays off. You're rewarded with proper 360-degree views across Mid Wales - moorland rolling away in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out distant peaks that make you feel like you're standing on top of something real.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble. The paths are well-trodden and the gradient, while noticeable, won't leave anyone gasping for breath. Families with school-age kids handle it fine, and it's the kind of place where even indifferent walkers get a kick from reaching the summit because the landscape opens up so dramatically.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top - just moorland, wind, and views. Bring water and something to eat because you'll want to linger. The local area has plenty of character: Llanidloes itself is charming enough for a coffee stop, and if you're based at Glangwy Farm Camping just up the road, this makes for a brilliant half-day excursion that ties in well with exploring the wider Powys valleys.

Go early if you can. The place gets quieter later in the day, and the light across the hills is best in morning or late afternoon. Weather moves quickly here - I've seen it change from clear to cloud-wrapped in minutes, so check conditions before you head out.
