Bryn Beddau Stone Circle

The stones themselves aren't immediately impressive - four upright slabs arranged in a rough circle on moorland above Ruthin, weathered to the point where you'd miss them if you weren't looking. But that's rather the point. Bryn Beddau is a Neolithic burial site, probably four or five thousand years old, and standing among those patient rocks does something that visitor centres full of interpretive panels never quite manage.

Walkers make up the bulk of visitors here. It's a proper moorland trek to reach it - not difficult, but you need to know roughly where you're going and be comfortable with open country. The views across Denbighshire are excellent, the kind that remind you why people bothered living in North Wales in the first place. Allow an hour return from the nearest parking, maybe more if you're photographing or just sitting about contemplating mortality.

It's free and there's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever, which is either a selling point or a problem depending on your outlook. Early morning or late afternoon light works best for photography. The site's genuinely quiet - you might be alone, which feels appropriate for somewhere this old.

If you're staying at Clwydian Glamping Pods, this makes a rewarding half-day outing. The walk itself is the main event rather than the destination. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're genuinely into archaeology, but for anyone who finds old stones interesting, it's worth the detour.
