Bryan's Wood

Walk into Bryan's Wood near Bridgnorth and you'll find yourself among proper old-growth woodland - the kind where light filters through in columns and the undergrowth still looks wild. It's a forest that feels genuinely untouched, which makes a refreshing change from the manicured nature reserves you get elsewhere.

The wood itself is fairly compact, so you're looking at something between a quick stroll and a proper two-hour ramble depending on which paths you fancy. There are no formal trails that I could see, which means you navigate by instinct and the occasional tree marker. Families with young kids might find it a bit too rough around the edges - it's muddy, root-strewn, and there's nowhere to grab a drink or a bite. But for serious walkers and anyone who actually likes getting a bit dishevelled in the forest, it's excellent.

The closest town is Bridgnorth, which gives you a decent hub for a day out. If you're camping at Wheathill Touring Park just up the road, Bryan's Wood slots in nicely as a morning expedition before heading into town for lunch. It's free to access, no facilities at all, and the best time to visit is late spring when the bluebells are still about, or autumn when the canopy turns.

Don't expect manicured paths or interpretation boards. Do expect silence, decent woodland ecology, and the chance to actually feel lost - in the good way.
