Browsholme Heights Wood

The woodland around Browsholme Heights, just outside Clitheroe, gives you proper forest walking without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss - mixed woodland with decent paths that let you get a real sense of the Ribble Valley landscape. The canopy work is lovely in autumn, and there's enough elevation change to keep things interesting without being punishing.

You're looking at a couple of hours here if you want to do it justice, though you can easily knock off a shorter loop depending on your mood and the weather. Walkers will get the most from it - families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so, but if they're used to the outdoors it's manageable. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider exploration of the Ribble Valley. Base yourself at Cross Lane Caravan Park or Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site and you're within striking distance of Browsholme, plus you've got Pendle Hill and the village of Slaidburn nearby if you want something with more of a destination feel. The woodland itself is free to roam, which is worth knowing - no admission charge or booking required. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though they can get muddy, so proper boots are the smart move rather than trainers.
