Browne Hill

The walk up Browne Hill rewards you with proper views across the High Peak landscape - nothing fancy, just solid Cheshire moorland stretched out beneath a big sky. It's the kind of spot locals know well but tourists often miss, which means you'll escape the crowds that clog up the better-known peaks nearby.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than a scramble. The terrain's rough underfoot in places, boggy in others, but nothing that'll trouble anyone with reasonable fitness. From the summit, you can pick out familiar shapes - Mam Tor looms across the valley, and on a clear day the views reach far enough to justify the effort. Allow two hours for the round trip if you take your time, less if you're pushing it.

This works brilliantly as a half-day outing from any of the caravan parks clustered around Buxton - Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just 5.8 miles south and rates five stars for good reason. Pair it with a visit to nearby Axe Edge Moor or use it as a warm-up walk before tackling something grander in the Peak District proper.

It's free to access and there are no facilities at the summit itself, so bring water. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without the payoff they'd get from more dramatic scenery. Winter visits are possible but the moorland gets bleak and boggy - autumn's probably your best bet.
