Broomycrook Knowe

The walk up Broomycrook Knowe from near Alnwick is proper straightforward but rewards you with views that stretch across Northumberland. It's not a dramatic fell - no dramatic scramble or anything - just a steady climb through decent moorland that takes a decent hour or so depending on your pace. Once you're up there, the plateau opens out and you can see for miles. The kind of spot where you realise how much space there actually is out here.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. It's not technical and the ground is mostly firm, though it gets boggy in patches after rain. You won't be hanging about though - the views are the thing, and once you've taken them in, there's not much else to do up there. Bring a flask and a decent jacket because the wind can pick up properly.

River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just a couple of miles away, which makes this a natural fit for a week in the area. It's a solid base for exploring the Cheviots without needing anything fancy. The nearest town is Alnwick, which at least has decent shops and pubs if you need sorting out. The walk itself is free, and you can start pretty much whenever suits you. Go when the weather's settled - these hills aren't worth tackling in proper fog.
