Broomhill Park

The woodland at Broomhill Park rises steeply from the Medway Valley floor, and on a clear day you can see right across to the North Downs. It's a proper nature reserve - dense with beech and oak, the sort of place where you notice things like nuthatches and spotted woodpeckers if you're patient enough to stand still. The walking is straightforward but the ground underfoot can be boggy in winter, so proper boots matter.

Historyophiles will find medieval earthworks scattered through here - traces of old settlements that predate modern Aylesford by centuries. But this isn't a destination you'll spend half a day at. You're looking at a good hour's circuit walk, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling and birdwatching. The real appeal is how quickly you feel removed from things once you're under the canopy.

Seriously worth combining with a stay at either Thamesview Camping or Kits Coty Glamping, both within easy driving distance. From those bases you could do Broomhill in the morning, then explore the broader Medway landscape - the river itself is genuinely worth seeing. The walk suits families with kids aged seven plus, though younger ones might find the muddy bits more hassle than fun. There's no visitor centre or facilities on site, so bring water. Free to visit, open access year-round, though spring and early autumn are when the reserve really sings.
