About Brooke Priory

The ruins of Brooke Priory sit quietly in the Rutland countryside, a few miles south of Oakham. What remains is essentially the foundation stones and lower walls of what was once an Augustinian priory founded in the 12th century - nothing dramatic, but oddly moving if you've got even a passing interest in medieval religious life. You'll spend twenty minutes wandering around the site, picking out where the buildings once stood, reading the informational plaques if they're still there. The setting is genuinely pleasant, surrounded by fields and proper countryside quiet. History types will find it worthwhile; families with restless kids might find it a bit sparse. There's not much interpretation on site, so it helps to read up beforehand or bring a guidebook. The priory was dissolved during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries - a story told a thousand times over, but no less significant for that. Free to visit, no facilities that I'm aware of, and you can turn up whenever you like. It's the sort of place that takes ten minutes to find but stays with you because of its sheer ordinariness - these weren't grand abbeys, they were working monasteries, and standing among their remains reminds you of that. If you're staying at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park or Emily's Cut Camping, both just a short drive away, it makes a decent half-morning stop before heading into Oakham for lunch or pressing on to explore more of Rutland's parks.
