Brook Down

A modest chalk downland summit near Stockbridge that rewards the climb with genuine 360-degree views across Hampshire's rolling countryside. Brook Down sits at just over 600 feet, so don't expect Alpine drama, but on a clear day you can pick out the Test Valley stretching below and the distant South Downs rising beyond.

The walk up is straightforward enough - a gentle slope through open grassland that takes no more than twenty minutes from the car park. It's the sort of place where you genuinely feel you've earned the view without needing fell boots and a packed rope. Children will manage it easily, and the downland turf is kind on the knees coming back down.

What makes it worthwhile isn't the peak itself but the walking country it opens up. You're positioned perfectly to drop into longer loops through the local footpath network, and on a quiet weekday you'll barely see another soul. The surrounding downland has that particular Hampshire character - springy grass, scattered hawthorn, and agricultural land that's actually being worked rather than manicured.

If you're staying at The Meadow Glamping or Stockbridge View nearby, this is ideal for a morning outing before breakfast gets cold. Go early enough and you might catch the frost burning off the valley floor. Worth the short drive from Stockbridge, though I wouldn't travel hours for it. It's a solid half-day walk rather than a destination in itself.
