Bronze Age Field System

Walking across open moorland near Kingsbridge, you'll stumble across something that stops you dead - ancient field boundaries carved into the earth, untouched for nearly 4,000 years. The Bronze Age Field System is exactly what it sounds: the actual layout of farmland from around 1500 BCE, complete with the stone walls and lynchets (terraced banks) that Bronze Age farmers built to divide their plots and control erosion. It's genuinely haunting to stand there knowing someone was working this exact patch of ground when Stonehenge was already ancient.

This isn't a manicured heritage site with interpretive boards and gift shops. It's raw archaeology, best explored on foot across the Devon moorland. You'll need decent walking boots and an imagination - don't come expecting reconstructed huts or displays. What you get is landscape archaeology in its purest form, and that's either fascinating or disappointing depending on what draws you.

Historians and walkers will find it brilliant. Kids under ten might lose interest after twenty minutes once they've realized there's no "stuff" to actually look at. Allow an hour to walk the site properly and soak in what Bronze Age agriculture actually looked like on the ground. It's free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be punishing.

If you're based at Wilton Farm or any of the other caravan parks within five miles of Kingsbridge, this works well as a half-day moorland walk. Pair it with a proper coastal route down toward Start Bay - you'll get both the history and the views.
