Brodie Pond

The water at Brodie Pond sits dark and still, ringed by Scots pine and birch that rise up steep on the northern bank. It's a proper wildlife spot - the sort of place where you'll actually see something rather than just walk round hoping. Waterfowl are thick here, especially in autumn and winter. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birds; casual visitors will still enjoy the quiet and the space.

It's an easy walk from Forres, tucked into the Aberdeenshire landscape with views across to the Moray plain. The paths are straightforward and mostly flat, making it manageable for families with younger kids, though it won't keep them entertained for hours. A decent ramble takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

What makes it work is the complete lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no cafe, no themed experiences - just a pond and the birds that use it. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want. If you're after a genuine nature reserve and don't mind standing quietly to spot something rare, it's well worth an afternoon stop. If you need facilities and activities, look elsewhere.
