Brockhall Wood

The woodland around Brockhall, just outside Blackburn, is proper walking territory. Ancient oak and beech trees dominate the canopy, and the paths wind through what feels genuinely unspoilt - no theme-park nonsense, just legitimate forest. You'll find yourself among bluebells in spring, which is when to time a visit if you can. Summer crowds thin things out a bit, but the shade becomes your best friend by July.

This is for walkers rather than people after a destination. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no manufactured experience. What you get is three to four miles of gentle rambling depending on which route you pick, with occasional glimpses of clearings. The terrain's manageable enough for families with older kids, though pushchairs won't thank you for the root systems and slight inclines. Allow a good two hours if you're not rushing.

It works well as a morning sortie if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Dale Hey Farm Touring Caravan Site sits closest, just under four miles away. Combine it with a proper walk at Beacon Fell itself, which has better views and more structured paths, if you want a full day out. Brockhall Wood is the quieter alternative when you need actual peace rather than another crowded beauty spot. Free to access, no parking charges that we could find, though there's limited space near the main entrance. Go on a weekday morning and you might have it to yourself.
