Broadleat

The woodland around Broadleat, just outside Marlborough, offers a proper escape if you're after something quieter than the honeypot spots. It's genuine forest - the kind with actual shade, uneven ground, and the possibility of getting a bit lost if you're not paying attention to the path.

What you get here is straightforward: trees, peace, and room to actually walk without queuing behind a hundred other people. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and children tend to do well as long as they've got the legs for uneven terrain. This isn't a manicured park with benches every fifty metres - it's the real thing.

Time-wise, you could spend an hour or three depending on which trails you fancy. The forest rewards proper exploring rather than a quick lap. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn's dramatic with fallen leaves everywhere.

Stay at Hillview Park or Ridgeway Campsite - both are less than three miles away - and you've got a solid base for mixing woodland walks with the market town energy of Marlborough itself. Ridgeway edges it at 5.0 stars if you want that reassurance. Totteridge Farm, slightly further at 3.4 miles, adds camping pods to the mix if you fancy something beyond a tent.

Worth fitting in alongside the bigger attractions? Absolutely. It won't dominate your itinerary, but it'll fill a morning brilliantly when you need actual forest rather than another visitor centre.
