Broadleas park

A proper woodland walk just outside Devizes, Broadleas is the kind of place where you can spend a leisurely hour or two without bumping into crowds. The reserve protects a mix of broadleaf woodland and open grassland - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you're after some quiet time among the trees.

You'll find walking trails threading through the site, and it's the sort of place where you might spot woodland birds or catch sight of rabbits bolting through the undergrowth. It works well for families with younger kids who don't need a full day's activity - the paths are manageable and there's something engaging about poking about looking for wildlife. History types might find the old woodland management interesting, though don't expect ruins or monuments.

The real appeal here is as a half-day add-on during a Wiltshire break rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Mill Farm or Honey Bee - both excellent and just a couple of miles away - Broadleas makes an easy morning visit before heading into Devizes proper for lunch. Little Owls Camping is equally close by.

Come in spring or early summer when the woodland floor is busy with life and the light's good. Autumn's nice too, though bring wellies if there's been rain. Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. Allow two hours maximum unless you're a serious birdwatcher or botanist. It's modest, but it does what it sets out to do without pretension.
