Broadhempston Community Woodland

A proper little woodland tucked between Newton Abbot and the rolling Devon countryside. Broadhempston Community Woodland isn't one of those manicured nature reserves with visitor centres and gift shops - it's the real thing, managed by locals who actually care about what grows here.

You'll find yourself wandering through mixed deciduous woodland with paths that meander past ancient oaks and a decent network of trails suitable for most fitness levels. Spring brings bluebells that genuinely take your breath away, and the bird life throughout the year keeps nature enthusiasts busy with binoculars. The woodland floor changes constantly depending on the season - in autumn you're crunching through leaf litter, in summer it's damp and cool even on hot days.

Walkers get the most from this place. It's not a destination to tick off in thirty minutes; you need at least two hours to do the woodland proper justice. Families with primary-age kids will enjoy it too, though there's nothing theatrical about it - no adventure playgrounds, just real woods. It's the kind of place where you might genuinely spot deer or hear a woodpecker.

If you're based at Ashbourne Woods just down the road, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's free and open to the public, though the lack of formal facilities means you should come prepared. There's no café, no toilets, no visitor infrastructure. That's rather the point.
