Broad Law

The walk up Broad Law rewards you with one of those rare Scottish views that actually lives up to the hype. At 2,038 metres, it's the highest point in the South Lanarkshire hills, and the climb from Biggar takes you through proper moorland - the kind of terrain that clears your head in about twenty minutes flat.

What strikes you most isn't the height itself but the sheer openness. On a decent day you can see for miles across the Lowlands, all the way to the Pentlands. The summit's marked by a trig point and an old radar station from the Cold War, which adds a bit of quirky interest if you're into that sort of thing. The path is well-trodden enough not to lose your way, but rough enough to feel like proper hiking rather than a stroll.

Couples and serious hill walkers will get the most out of this. Young children might struggle with the exposed sections, and it's not the place to bring anyone who isn't comfortable with wind and weather - the ridge can feel quite exposed when conditions turn. Allow three to four hours round trip depending on your pace and fitness.

The moorland changes throughout the year. Spring and early summer are most pleasant, though honestly autumn brings sharper views when the air clears. Free to do, obviously - it's a Scottish hill.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park just outside Biggar, this makes a brilliant half-day outing before heading to bigger attractions in the region.
