Broad Hill

The walk up Broad Hill is straightforward enough - a modest climb from the Biggar side that takes about 90 minutes round trip, depending on your fitness and how much you stop to look around. It's not a dramatic peak by Scottish standards, but the views across South Lanarkshire are genuinely good, rolling farmland stretching out in all directions with the higher hills visible in the distance.

This is the sort of hill that appeals to families with kids old enough to manage a decent walk, and to local ramblers who know the area well. Solitary walkers will find it peaceful rather than spectacular. On a clear day the 570-metre summit gives you proper visibility - you can pick out landmarks towards Lanark and beyond. The landscape feels properly rural, not touristy.

The nearest town is Biggar, which sits bang in the middle of the Lowlands, so Broad Hill works well as a half-day excursion if you're based at Mount View Caravan Park a few miles away. The terrain is manageable year-round, though it gets boggy in wet weather. Spring and early autumn are probably your best bet for clear skies and firmer ground underfoot.

Honestly, it's not the sort of walk that will blow your mind. It's useful if you're spending time in the area and want to get out on foot. If you're planning a week around the Scottish hills, you'd likely find more rewarding peaks further north. But for a local outing from Biggar, it does the job.
