British Merchant Navy Memorial

The British Merchant Navy Memorial sits quietly in Dumfries, a tribute to the men and women who died at sea during the two world wars. It's not the sort of place that announces itself loudly - you won't find crowds or queues - but that's rather the point. The memorial acknowledges over 24,000 merchant sailors lost, many whose names appear on the stone itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Newbridge Country Park is barely two miles away, or Marthrown of Mabie just beyond that - it's an easy ten-minute drive into town.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though opening hours aren't widely advertised, so arrive during daylight to be safe. It's not a destination that'll keep families entertained for long, and it won't compete with the natural attractions of the surrounding Galloway landscape. But if you're spending time in the area, it deserves a quiet visit.
