Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

The museum sits right in the Royal Pavilion Gardens, which means you're already halfway to a decent afternoon just from the setting alone. Inside, the collections jump around quite a bit - one minute you're looking at local history, the next there's contemporary art on the walls. The real draw here is the decorative arts collection, which includes some cracking examples of Art Deco and Arts and Crafts pieces. You'll also find world art tucked in, so it's genuinely eclectic rather than just a local history box.

Historians and anyone keen on design will spend a good couple of hours here without getting restless. Kids might last an hour or so depending on age - it's not interactive in the modern sense, though the spaces are bright enough. The building itself, housed in a Victorian structure, is worth the visit even if you only pop in for 30 minutes.

Admission is free, which is brilliant. You can easily fit this into a morning or grab an hour between other Brighton activities. The gardens outside are worth a wander afterwards - proper pleasant, especially if the weather's on your side.

If you're camping at Pegs and Pitches (just over a mile away), this makes for a no-fuss day out. Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is under two miles off, so you're close enough that you won't waste time on transfers. The museum pairs well with the seafront or The Lanes - all within walking distance, all easily managed in a day.
