Bridge Pool

The water at Bridge Pool sits still and dark, ringed by steep wooded banks that make the whole spot feel rather cut off from the world. You'll find it just outside Bridgnorth, and it's one of those places locals know about but visitors often miss entirely.

It's a proper swimming hole, essentially - a widening of the River Severn where the current slows enough to make the water safe. On a warm day in summer, you'll see families wading in and the braver sorts diving off the rocks. The banks are heavily wooded, which means it's cool even when everywhere else is baking. There's a small car park and a path down, though the slope is fairly steep - worth noting if you've got young children in tow.

Historically this mattered: the pool was where Bridgnorth's working people came to bathe when that was still a novelty. Nowadays it's less about washing and more about escaping. Walkers benefit most. The location sits on several longer routes through the Severn Valley, so you might combine it with a decent hike rather than make it a standalone stop. Sitting for an hour is pleasant; you won't need more.

If you're based at Wheathill Touring Park nearby, it's an easy 15-minute drive and makes a decent afternoon detour. Swimming clothes essential in summer, though it's free and requires no booking. Winter visits feel quite lonesome - locals' knowledge territory rather than holiday destination fare.
