Bremhill Grove

The woodland around Bremhill, just outside Chippenham, is proper walking territory. You're looking at mixed deciduous forest - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which makes a change from most of Wiltshire's open farmland. The trees offer decent shelter and there are various paths threading through, though you'll want a map or a good sense of direction because signage isn't always obvious.

It's best suited to walkers and families with older kids who won't need constant entertainment. You could easily spend an hour or two here, longer if you're really poking about. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Access appears to be free, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - take a packed lunch if you're making a day of it.

What makes it worthwhile is the escape value rather than dramatic scenery. It's the kind of place you'd pop to between other activities - say, after exploring Chippenham's high street or using one of the nearby caravan sites as a base. The Retreat Glamping and Roe Deer Fields are both within three miles, so it could slot nicely into a park holiday if you're not after manicured gardens or major attractions. Come expecting a quiet woodland walk, not a destination event, and you'll leave satisfied.
