Bredgar & Wormshill Railway

Steam locomotives still run through the Kent countryside on the Bredgar & Wormshill Railway, a narrow-gauge line that's been restored and operated by volunteers since the 1970s. It's a proper slice of railway nostalgia - the kind of place where you actually hear the hiss of steam and smell hot coal rather than just looking at heritage exhibits behind glass.

The railway operates seasonal services, typically weekends and school holidays, running trains through genuinely pleasant countryside between the two villages. You'll get around 20 minutes or so on the train itself, which is enough to feel like a proper journey without outstaying your welcome. The carriages are vintage but decent, and there's something genuinely fun about watching enthusiasts in hi-vis jackets pottering about with oilcans, completely absorbed in their work.

This works brilliantly for families with younger kids - there's no educational pretence, just actual trains you can ride and watch being prepared. Older children who like machinery will find it more engaging than parents might expect. Anyone who grew up near working railways will find themselves getting sentimental.

Location-wise, it's about 20 minutes from Maidstone, making it an easy add-on during a holiday in the area. Chegworth Mill Glamping is only a few miles away, and Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite even closer - both solid bases if you're planning a few days. The railway ticks the box for a couple of hours well spent without requiring much planning, and it genuinely beats a lot of the more heavily marketed attractions.
