Bratley Plain

Calling this a 'peak' feels rather generous - Bratley Plain sits at just 126 metres above sea level in the New Forest. But what it lacks in dramatic elevation, it makes up for with proper wilderness views that stretch for miles across the ancient heathland. The walk up from the car park near Lyndhurst takes about thirty minutes through mixed woodland before opening onto the heather-clad plateau. It's surprisingly peaceful once you're away from the main forest tracks, with only the occasional pony for company. Families will find the terrain manageable, though the boggy patches after rain can catch you out if you're not wearing decent boots. The real draw here is the sense of space - rare to find this feeling of remoteness so close to civilization. History buffs might appreciate that this area has remained largely unchanged for centuries, grazed by commoners' animals as part of ancient forest rights. Best visited on a clear day when you can see right across to the Isle of Wight. Allow two hours for the round trip if you want to properly explore the plain rather than just bag the high point. Works well as part of a longer New Forest stay, with several decent campsites like Ocknell and Setthorns within easy reach for those wanting to make a proper weekend of it.
