Brat Tor

The walk up Brat Tor from Okehampton takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and it's one of those Devon peaks that rewards the effort without being punishing. The tor itself is a proper granite outcrop - all weathered rock and moorland views that stretch across Dartmoor in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles.

It's a decent hike for families with older kids or anyone who fancies a proper walk without needing climbing gear. The path is reasonably well-trodden and the ascent, while steady, won't leave you gasping. Bring proper boots though - the ground gets boggy in patches, especially after rain.

What you get at the top is the thing really. The views across Dartmoor are genuinely good, and there's something satisfying about standing on a real summit, even if it's not particularly high. On quieter days you'll have the place almost to yourself, which is rare for anywhere remotely accessible.

If you're staying at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, this makes a cracking half-day outing. The park itself is well-positioned for exploring this part of Dartmoor, and Brat Tor is a straightforward drive. Allow two to three hours total including the walk and a sit-down at the top with a flask. Go early in the day if you can - the light's better and you'll avoid the afternoon crowds that sometimes make the moor feel busier than it actually is.
