Brass Castle Brewery

The first thing that hits you at Brass Castle is the smell - proper hoppy and inviting. This brewery sits just outside Pickering and operates from a converted farmstead with real character, all exposed beams and industrial equipment doing what it's meant to do. You can watch the brewing happen if you time it right, which is far more interesting than you'd think.

They make solid ales and lagers here, nothing too experimental or precious. The tasting room is where you'll spend most of your time, sampling whatever's on tap and chatting to staff who actually know what they're talking about. It's informal rather than slick - there's no elaborate tour script or branded merchandise shoved in your face.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Black Bull Caravan Park down the road and fancy a different evening out. The brewery's walkable if the weather's kind, though you might want to drive back after a few. It's worth allowing a couple of hours - longer if you're food-oriented and they've got something on. Not for kids really, unless they're teenagers who can sit quietly.

Pickering itself is a proper market town with the castle ruins if you need attractions with more obvious appeal. But if you're into your beer and want somewhere that feels genuinely local rather than set-dressed for visitors, this delivers. The ale's good, the vibe's honest.
