Brailes Hill

The walk up Brailes Hill takes about twenty minutes from the village below, and it's one of those climbs that feels properly rewarding without being punishing. You're rewarded with views across the rolling Oxfordshire countryside - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely on a clear day. The hill itself is modest, nothing like the Cotswold Edge, but it's got character.

From the top you can see for miles across farmland and hedgerows. On good weather days it's the sort of place where you understand why people settle in this corner of the world. The walk itself is straightforward, though the final stretch gets a bit steep - wear proper boots if there's been rain.

It works well as part of a longer ramble rather than a standalone trip. Shipston-on-Stour is the nearest town, about four miles away, so it's manageable as a morning outing from any of the local campsites - Shire Camping and Crofts Barn Campsite are both within reasonable distance. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the last push tiring.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water. Free to access, obviously - it's just a hill. Allow an hour round-trip including a few minutes at the summit to catch your breath and take in the view. It's not a detour for its own sake, but if you're camping in the area it's absolutely worth an afternoon.
