Braikie Castle

The ruins of Braikie Castle sit quietly on the Aberdeenshire landscape, a modest 16th-century stronghold that won't take your breath away but rewards a visit if you're already in the area. What remains is basically a broken tower and some crumbling walls - you're looking at perhaps twenty minutes of actual exploring, maybe half an hour if you take your time photographing the stonework and reading the information board.

It's the sort of place that appeals to castle-spotters doing a tick-box tour of the region rather than casual day-trippers. History enthusiasts who get excited about Scottish defensive architecture will find the structure genuinely interesting, especially the way the remaining walls show how the original layout worked. Families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's not much to climb, no interactive elements, and if the weather turns miserable the exposed location offers zero shelter.

Arbroath, about eight miles south, is your nearest town for facilities. If you're basing yourself at The Grange Glamping nearby - which does look excellent for a park holiday with its animal experience setup - Braikie makes a reasonable morning detour without eating up most of your day. Free admission, as far as I can tell, though there's nothing to stop at and pay. Go early morning or late afternoon if the light's good and you want decent photographs. It's honest ruins, unpretentious, and exactly what you'd expect from a castle that's been standing (or rather, half-standing) for five centuries.
