There's a nature reserve tucked away near Downpatrick that most visitors completely miss, which is a shame because the wetland habitat here genuinely rewards a proper explore. BPF Road Marking Ltd manages this reserve, and despite the unglamorous name, it's a proper spot for spotting birds and getting a sense of what the landscape looked like before intensive farming took over.

You're looking at marshy ground with pools and reed beds - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Winter and spring are when things get interesting: winter for overwintering wildfowl, spring when migrants start arriving. Bring binoculars and a decent field guide or you'll spend half your time wondering what that brown job in the distance actually was.

It's best suited to keen birdwatchers and anyone serious about wildlife photography rather than families wanting a quick leg-stretch. An hour's visit is plenty unless you're committed to the full ornithological experience, in which case settle in for the morning. There's no visitor centre or amenities to speak of, so come prepared.

If you're basing yourself at Delamont Country Park just down the road, this makes a worthwhile morning detour before heading back for lunch. The proximity to Downpatrick also means you can combine it with other bits of the area without it eating into your holiday schedule. Check ahead for access - seasonal closures do happen for conservation reasons.
