Boxley Warren

Dense woodland just outside Aylesford, Boxley Warren is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a proper forest - not manicured, not particularly signposted - which is exactly why it works. The trees crowd together overhead, blocking most of the sky, and the ground underfoot is soft with decades of fallen needles and leaf litter.

Walkers will find genuine paths threading through here, though nothing demanding. It's ideal if you want to shake off a morning at the nearby Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite without driving anywhere. An hour gets you a decent sortie; two hours if you fancy proper exploring. The forest has that slightly wild quality Kent woodlands do - you half expect to round a corner and find something unexpected, though mostly you'll just find more trees.

Kids under seven might struggle with the lack of obvious attractions or play areas. Older ones, especially if they're the type who like building dens and scrambling over roots, will have a ball. Photographers and naturalists will find interesting shade-loving plants and plenty of atmospheric shots.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring water, decent boots, and don't rely on phone signal. Parking is basic but free. Spring and early summer are best, when the understory comes alive. Winter's muddy and dark in equal measure. It's not a destination attraction, but as an add-on to a caravan holiday in the area, it's genuinely worthwhile.
