Bowbutts Hill

Standing atop this ancient hill fort, you'll find the remains of Bronze Age earthworks that once defended this strategic spot in the East Yorkshire landscape. The site consists of a series of ditches and ramparts, though time and agriculture have softened their edges considerably since they were first constructed around 3,000 years ago.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the significance of this scheduled monument, even if the casual visitor might struggle to make out much beyond grassy mounds. The views across the surrounding farmland towards Driffield are lovely on a clear day, making the short walk worthwhile for anyone staying at nearby parks like Parkdean Resorts Barmston Beach Holiday Park or Skipsea Sands Holiday Park.

There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards here - just you, the wind, and centuries of history beneath your feet. Access appears to be free, though parking can be tricky along the narrow country lanes. Allow about half an hour unless you're particularly keen on ancient fortifications. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming compared to more dramatic castle ruins, but it's a proper piece of prehistoric Yorkshire that's well worth combining with a coastal holiday in the area.
