The Lakes

Just outside Driffield, The Lakes is a proper working nature reserve where you can actually see something beyond the usual park lake - this place has real ecological teeth. The site comprises several water bodies that attract waders, wildfowl, and the odd heron if you're patient enough to wait for one. It's the kind of place where birdwatchers genuinely find something worth noting in their little books, though casual visitors will find it peaceful rather than spectacular.

The walking is gentle and straightforward, following paths around the water without any real elevation. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're taking your time with binoculars; half an hour if you're just passing through. Bring wellies - it can get boggy depending on rainfall. Early mornings are best for spotting anything that moves, so plan accordingly if you're serious about the wildlife.

It works well as a morning outing from any of the nearby sites - Skirlington Leisure Park and Mr Moo's are practically on your doorstep - before heading into Driffield itself or combining it with a visit to somewhere with more obvious attractions. The reserve is free to access and there's no gate or charge that I could find, though do check locally as these things change.

Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet unless there's serious bird enthusiasm in the group. Couples and keen naturalists will get far more from it. It's honest terrain - neither remarkable nor disappointing, just a solid little reserve that does what it says.
