Walking into East Redcarr Plantation near Driffield feels like stepping into a proper woodland tucked away from the main tourist trail. It's a mixed forest - the kind where you'll find a mix of conifers and broadleaf trees, with decent paths threading through. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

You get a solid hour or two of walking here, which makes it ideal if you're based at Cliff Top Caravan Park up the road and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day trek. The woodland canopy does its job, so it's reasonable even if the weather's turned a bit damp. Kids won't find it thrilling - there's no play area or visitor centre - but older children who actually enjoy walking without constant entertainment will be fine.

The real appeal is the quiet. You won't find crowds here, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you're not battling through waist-high bracken. It's the sort of place locals know about rather than somewhere that makes the guidebooks.

Free to access and open year-round. Spring's decent if the bluebells are out, though autumn when the deciduous trees turn is probably the best time. Being honest, it's not a reason to travel miles to visit on its own, but as a break between other bits around East Yorkshire, it does the job. Perfect for that half-morning before heading into Driffield for lunch.
