Bow Fiddle Rock Viewpoint

The rock formation juts out into the North Sea like a stone fiddle bow - hence the name. You're standing on the cliffs near Banff, peering down at this natural arch that's been carved by centuries of waves doing their patient, relentless work. It's genuinely impressive from above, though the real magic happens when the light hits it right and the sea churns below.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a five-minute snap-and-leave situation - you'll want to allow a good hour to explore the clifftop paths, wander down to the beach if the tide cooperates, and find the spot where the arch actually looks like its name. The path gets properly slippery after rain, so decent shoes matter. It's free, obviously, being a natural landmark.

Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the steep bits nerve-wracking. This isn't a destination that stands alone though. If you're staying at Sandend Holidays or Greencraig Pods, both within five miles, it's an easy morning or afternoon addition to a wider coastal walk. The village of Banff itself has a bit more to keep you occupied than just the rock - it's got its own character without feeling like a tourist trap.

Go when the weather's decent. Stormy conditions look dramatic but make the clifftop genuinely hazardous. Spring through early autumn gives you the best light and the most reliable access.
