Preacher’s Cave

The cave sits tucked into the cliffside near Banff, reached by a coastal path that winds past gorse and rocky outcrops. It's a modest affair - not a vast underground cathedral, but a genuine cave with real history attached. Supposedly a 17th-century preacher called Alexander Peden hid here after the Covenanters were persecuted, which gives the place a bit of substance beyond just being a hole in the rock.

What you actually get is a decent scramble down to the mouth and a chance to poke about inside. The walk itself is the real draw - coastal scenery, proper Highland air, and if you time it right with low tide you can explore the cave floor without worrying about getting your feet soaked. It's not strenuous, maybe 20 minutes from the nearest parking spot, and works well as part of a longer coastal walk rather than a standalone visit.

History enthusiasts will find it interesting enough, though don't expect signage or interpretation. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage the scramble fine. Anyone after a gentle seaside ramble that includes a bit of storytelling will get value from it.
