Ha' Hillock, Motte

You'll find yourself standing on a modest grass mound just outside Banff, looking at what remains of a medieval stronghold that's been slowly surrendering to the Scottish weather for nearly a thousand years. Ha' Hillock is a motte - that's a raised earthwork that once supported a wooden palisade and keep, typical of Norman fortifications planted across Britain after 1066. The view across the surrounding farmland is decent enough, though you won't get any dramatic Highland vistas here.
