Bourne Wood

The woodland east of Cambridge is proper dense - ancient oak and beech crammed together so thick you lose the sky above for long stretches. Bourne Wood is the kind of place where you can actually breathe properly after being in the city, with a decent network of paths threading through the trees at various speeds.

It's manageable on foot without being a trudge. Most routes take between 45 minutes and two hours depending on which trails you pick, and the terrain is forgiving enough for families with decent walkers and anyone wanting to escape the flat fenland for an afternoon. The seasonal shifts matter here - spring brings bluebells, autumn turns the canopy into proper gold. Winter's quieter but the branches open up the views a bit more.

Ramblers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or complicated, but it does the job - real forest, real peace, no crowds. The paths are well-marked enough that you won't spend the day lost. Bring decent boots after rain though; it gets boggy in places.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Chittering Park or Fen End Farm are closest at under four miles - this makes a solid leg-stretch between pitching up and whatever else you're doing round Cambridge. It's honest woodland rather than Instagram-friendly, which means you've got a genuine chance of spotting wildlife without pushing through selfie crowds. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
