Boundary Plantation

Walk into Boundary Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy is thick enough to make you forget there's a car park behind you. Near Morpeth, this forest offers a straightforward escape into conifer and broadleaf mix without the crowds you'd find elsewhere in Northumberland.

It's essentially a walking destination, nothing fancy. You've got trails that wind through the trees - some boggy underfoot if it's been wet, so decent boots are essential rather than optional. The plantation itself isn't dramatically scenic like the wild moorlands further north, but that's actually its charm. It's quiet, reliable, and genuinely restful in the way old working forests often are.

If you're staying at Bockenfield or Felmoor - both excellent bases a few miles south - this makes an easy morning sortie without needing to drive far. You can spend ninety minutes or two hours here without feeling rushed. It's decent for families with kids who like a proper walk but aren't ready for serious fell routes. Just don't expect dramatic views or natural landmarks; bring it for the straightforward woodland atmosphere instead.

The honest verdict? It won't wow you, but it'll give you some proper air and tree cover when you need it. Worth a half-day if you're in the area, not worth a special trip on its own.
