Loughborough's bouldering wall is a proper indoor climbing setup that works best if you actually know how to boulder. It's free to use, which is the main selling point, but don't expect fancy facilities or staff who'll hold your hand through your first session. You're looking at a warehouse space with various climbing problems of different grades marked on the wall - colours indicate difficulty, and there's enough variety to keep beginners occupied and intermediates reasonably challenged.

The place attracts serious climbers from across the East Midlands who want to train without membership fees, plus the occasional family group curious about having a go. If you've never climbed before, bring someone who has or be prepared for a steep learning curve - quite literally. Kids find it brilliant once they get past the initial "I can't do this" moment, though younger ones might get frustrated fast.

Allow an hour if you're trying it out, longer if you're working through multiple problems. Best visited off-peak - weekday mornings beat weekend afternoons by a country mile. Check opening times locally before you go, as they seem to vary.
