Bottom Row

Bottom Row is a proper woodland walk just outside Reading, the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's genuinely quiet - ancient forest floor, mature trees creating a natural cathedral overhead, and paths that feel like they belong to locals rather than the day-tripper circuit.

The walk itself winds through mixed woodland with decent sightlines and plenty of room to stretch legs without feeling herded. On a clear day you can sense the space opening up, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep it interesting rather than just trudging the same old trail. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so - there's no visitor centre, no play areas, just trees and paths. If your lot are into spotting wildlife or building sticks into dens, different story. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes, though you can duck in for a quick twenty-minute loop if you're passing through Reading.

Combine it with Wellington Country Park six miles away for a proper outdoor day. Wellington has more facilities and suits families better, so hit Bottom Row early before the light gets thick, then head over for a picnic and explore their grounds. The woodland is free to access, which is a bonus - no barrier to a decent walk when the weather's half-decent.
